TMU faces reckoning as sex abuse cover-up probe nears completion

Investigation Nears Conclusion

Truett McConnell University (TMU) trustees expect results from a third-party investigation into an alleged cover-up by late September. The probe follows May revelations by The Roys Report (TRR) about sexual abuse claims involving former TMU vice president Bradley Reynolds. TMU spokesperson Brandi Wood confirmed on August 6 that the investigation is still active.

Allegations Against Former VP

Reynolds, who worked at TMU for 15 years, left in 2024 after police began investigating claims by former student and soccer coach Hayle Swinson. Swinson alleges Reynolds groomed and abused her, sending hundreds of explicit emails and manipulating her with false claims about his wife’s death. She said the abuse caused severe emotional trauma and suicidal thoughts.

Claims of Administrative Inaction

A former staff member alleged President Emir Caner was told about Reynolds’s misconduct in 2016 but took no action. In 2019, 50 female students signed a petition citing Reynolds’s inappropriate behavior, yet he remained in his role until 2024. Critics argue this reflects a culture of institutional silence.

Leadership Changes and Institutional Response

After TRR’s report and subsequent local media coverage, TMU trustees met on June 6. They placed Caner on administrative leave and appointed John Yarbrough, a longtime TMU figure and former Georgia Baptist Convention president, as interim president. TMU is affiliated with the Georgia Baptist Mission Board and serves over 2,100 students, mostly online.

Supporters and Detractors Weigh In

Supporters of TMU’s current leadership argue that trustees acted decisively once allegations became public. They also emphasize the university’s cooperation with the independent investigation. Detractors contend that the delayed response and ignored warnings point to systemic failures in protecting students. The final report, handled by investigator Richard Hyde and Phoenix Research LLC, is expected to shape TMU’s next steps.
