A new Gallup poll reveals that most Americans consider birth control, divorce, and sex between unmarried adults morally acceptable. Birth control garners near-universal approval at 90%, while 75% say divorce is morally permissible. Support for same-sex relationships stands at 64%, and 67% find having children outside marriage acceptable. These figures reflect a growing permissiveness in U.S. social values over the past two decades.
Divided Opinions on Abortion and Animal Testing
Americans remain divided on several controversial topics. Abortion sees a near-even split, with 49% finding it morally acceptable and 40% disagreeing. Opinions on medical testing on animals are equally split at 47% each. These splits indicate deeply held and unresolved ethical divides. Supporters highlight personal freedom and scientific advancement, while detractors often cite ethical and religious concerns.
Lowest Support for Affairs, Human Cloning, and Polygamy
Extramarital affairs and human cloning are seen as the most immoral actions, with only 8% approving of each. Polygamy garners just 21% support, though that number has tripled since 2003. Suicide and pornography also remain broadly disapproved, with only 21% and 35% finding them morally acceptable. Detractors worry these practices erode family values and social cohesion.
Young Adults Show Greater Moral Acceptance
Younger Americans (18–34) are significantly more accepting of most behaviors. For example, 31% support polygamy, compared to just 10% of those over 55. Support for gender transition is at 55% among younger adults, while only 35% of older adults agree. Youth also show more tolerance for same-sex relations, abortion, and pornography. However, they are less supportive of medical testing on animals and embryonic stem cell research.
Shifts Over Time Show Growing Permissiveness
Since 2001, American moral views have become more permissive overall. Divorce support rose from 59% to 75%, and acceptance of gay or lesbian relations increased from 40% to 64%. The only area with a sustained drop in support is animal testing, which fell from 65% in 2001 to 47% in 2025. Despite shifts, moral views on some issues like birth control and adultery have remained relatively stable.
