Surge in Church Vandalism and Arson Sparks Concern Nationwide
Acts of vandalism and arson targeting churches have continued across the United States in 2025, extending a troubling pattern that began during the 2020 George Floyd riots and resurged following the 2022 reversal of Roe v. Wade. Church leaders, law enforcement, and community members remain alarmed by the persistent violence, while public debate intensifies over motive and meaning.
Kansas Church Defaced with Satanic Messages
On March 15, St. Patrick Catholic Church in Wichita, Kansas, reported serious vandalism, including a broken statue and shattered windows. The Kansas Catholic Conference revealed that satanic graffiti had been scrawled on the property. Police arrested a 23-year-old male from Saline County the following day. He was charged with burglary, desecration, and property damage. President Donald Trump responded, saying his administration would “take a look.”
Indianapolis Church Bus and Building Defaced
On March 18, vandals defaced the building and a bus at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in Indianapolis with the number 666 and a profane message. Local police released surveillance images and, by March 20, arrested two juveniles believed responsible. Authorities did not disclose the motive but emphasized the disturbing nature of the targeted language.
Historic Memphis Church Set Ablaze
In April, an arsonist severely damaged the historic Clayborn Temple Church in Memphis, Tennessee. Although the church has been closed since 1999, it remains a landmark of the Civil Rights Movement. Investigators determined the fire was deliberately set inside. A person of interest is still being sought. Public response was swift, raising \$1.5 million toward restoration efforts.
Virginia Church Sign Vandalized with Occult Symbols
Liberty Baptist Church in Lanexa, Virginia, reported on May 1 that its digital sign was defaced with “Hail Satan,” “Lucifer,” and anarchist symbols. More graffiti appeared on the ground and near the church’s historical marker. No suspects have yet been identified.
Explosive Device Damages Pennsylvania Chapel
On May 6, a vandal placed an explosive device at St. Teresa of Calcutta Church in Mahanoy City, Pennsylvania. The altar suffered significant damage. Kyle Kuczynski, 32, was arrested the same evening and charged with arson and related offenses.
Anti-Religious Graffiti Alarms Pittsburgh Parish
On July 19, Bishop Mark Eckman reported that St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church in Pleasant Hills had been defaced with anti-Catholic and anti-Semitic graffiti. The FBI is leading the investigation. Images showed a Star of David on a statue of Mary, along with other inflammatory messages.

Supporters of church protection argue these attacks represent escalating anti-religious sentiment and demand stricter penalties. Detractors caution against linking all incidents to organized ideological movements and urge addressing root causes, including mental health and political polarization.
