Harlem’s historic church battles lawsuit against senior pastor

More than two dozen members of Harlem’s Abyssinian Baptist Church gathered in a Manhattan courtroom on July 17 for the first hearing in a lawsuit challenging the appointment of Rev. Kevin Johnson as senior pastor. Plaintiffs allege his 2023 election was marred by irregularities and lacked transparency. The church, however, argues the suit is an attempt by dissenters to push their candidate.

Plaintiffs Question Election Validity and Transparency

The lawsuit, filed in October 2023 by four current and former members, asserts that Johnson’s election violated church bylaws. They claim the pastoral search committee showed bias by presenting only Johnson as a candidate. According to plaintiffs’ attorney Jonathan Nelson, Johnson did not receive a majority of votes from the whole congregation, as required by the bylaws.

Church Leadership Defends Election Process

Abyssinian’s legal team moved to dismiss the lawsuit, describing it as a ploy to reverse a legitimate election. Attorney Brian Pete argued that the vote was conducted correctly, saying, “Elections are decided by those who choose to vote.” He emphasized that the plaintiffs had actively campaigned against Johnson and failed to stop his election through regular channels.

Division and Resignations Shake Historic Congregation

The case has caused deep divisions within the iconic Harlem church, once led by Congressman Adam Clayton Powell Jr. and Rev. Calvin O. Butts. Several longtime members have left, including plaintiff C. Vernon Mason Sr., who was removed as a deacon due to his involvement. Others, like Jasmine McFarlane-White, remain committed despite the controversy.

Broader Impact on Church and Community Programs

Supporters of the lawsuit fear the dispute could harm Abyssinian’s standing and community efforts, including its food pantry. Critics worry that the lawsuit undermines the congregation’s autonomy and could draw courts into the internal governance of the church. The judge’s decision could reshape not only leadership but also the future of one of Harlem’s most storied institutions.
