Bellevue Baptist Church welcomes Ben Mandrell as new pastor

Ben Mandrell, president of Lifeway Christian Resources, is stepping down to become pastor of Bellevue Baptist Church in Memphis. The move marks a rare mid-career transition from the helm of the Southern Baptist Convention’s (SBC) influential publishing arm to the pulpit of a historic local church. Mandrell, 48, is the first Lifeway president in modern history to leave the post well before retirement age.

A Rare Move in Lifeway’s 134-Year History

Mandrell’s decision echoes only a few early examples in Lifeway’s history, notably J.M. Frost and T.P. Bell in the late 19th century. Since then, every president has either retired or been pushed out due to ideological shifts. His departure breaks with the pattern of leaders maintaining the post’s prestige and influence until retirement.

A Historic Pulpit with a National Legacy

Bellevue Baptist Church, once led by giants such as R.G. Lee and Adrian Rogers, remains a significant force within the SBC despite its declining membership size. Mandrell will succeed Steve Gaines, who served since 2005 and will retire to focus on evangelism. The transition places Mandrell in a lineage of prominent conservative pastors who have shaped Southern Baptist theology and culture.

Challenges Faced During Mandrell’s Tenure

Mandrell’s six-year tenure at Lifeway included unprecedented challenges. He navigated the organization through the COVID-19 pandemic, an SBC-wide decline in membership, and the closure of all Lifeway retail stores. These pressures, coupled with shifting denominational allegiances, made leadership uniquely difficult. Insiders say he had been seeking a new ministry context for some time.

Mixed Reactions to Mandrell’s Departure

Supporters praise Mandrell’s steady leadership during a turbulent time and view his return to the pastorate as a faithful calling. Critics, however, question whether his departure reflects more profound dissatisfaction or instability within Lifeway and the broader SBC leadership structure. The board must now appoint an interim and begin a search for the 11th president.
