Three Leaders Depart Following Boyd’s Exit
Less than two weeks after Senior Pastor Brady Boyd was asked to resign, the elders of New Life Church have requested that two additional top leaders step down. Executive Pastor of Adult Discipleship, Lance Coles, and Chief Financial Officer, Brian Newberg, will leave after a transition period. All three have been removed from the church’s website, including Boyd’s wife, Pam Boyd, who served as women’s ministry pastor.
Ties to Abuse Scandal Sparked Investigation
The leadership changes follow revelations involving Robert Morris, Boyd’s former colleague and a pastor facing sexual abuse charges. Boyd previously served at Gateway Church under Morris and was later invited to preach at New Life. In June 2024, Cindy Clemishire accused Morris of sexually abusing her when she was 12. Elders later obtained emails suggesting Boyd had known more than he admitted publicly about the abuse and Clemishire’s age.
Elders Say Trust Was Broken
According to a June 29 Q&A distributed to congregants, the elders called Boyd “unrepentant” and stated that he had misled them. They cited 2011 emails indicating Boyd knew the nature of Clemishire’s allegations. Boyd had claimed ignorance during a June 8 message to the congregation. Elders also stated that Clemishire’s sister informed New Life’s 2007 search committee about Morris, contradicting Boyd’s account.
Congregation Divided Over Leadership Changes
Boyd’s supporters protested outside the Colorado Springs megachurch on June 29. Wearing yellow shirts reading “We Stand With Pastor Brady,” they criticized the process and defended Boyd’s legacy. Some congregants expressed frustration with how the church handled the resignations. A Facebook group supporting Boyd has attracted over 400 members.
New Pastor Installed Amid Ongoing Tensions
Daniel Grothe, already slated as Boyd’s successor, has taken over as senior pastor. Elders maintain that no other pastors besides Coles and Newberg were aware of the Morris situation. Coles, notably, is the brother-in-law of New Life’s founder Ted Haggard, who resigned in 2006 amid his scandal.
