Washington, D.C. residents are reacting with frustration and anger to former President Donald Trump’s recent deployment of federal forces in the city. On Wednesday night, large-scale checkpoints appeared in Northwest D.C., drawing immediate backlash from the public. Officers from the Metropolitan Police Department, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and other federal agencies stopped cars and reportedly arrested at least one person, a Black woman, sparking outrage.
Checkpoints Draw Loud Public Backlash
Footage from 14th Street showed officers—many in unmarked cars and wearing masks—pulling drivers from vehicles. Crowds gathered, chanting and shouting at law enforcement. “Go home!” and “Leave us alone!” echoed through the streets. Bystanders booed and expressed their fury, with some accusing the officers of harassment. “You are surrounded by a mob of people that hate you,” one protester yelled.
Federal Presence Expands in Quiet Neighborhoods
Earlier this week, Trump announced he had federalized the Metropolitan Police Department and sent in 800 National Guardsmen. Since Wednesday morning, a visible increase in ICE and Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) presence has been noted in peaceful areas like Adams Morgan and Georgetown. Many residents view the escalation as unnecessary, given the city’s relatively stable crime levels.
Racial Profiling Allegations Fuel Outrage
The federal action has not only upset residents but also reignited concerns about racial profiling. On Monday night, U.S. Park Police reportedly harassed Black residents smoking on their porch, mistaking cigarettes for marijuana. One officer allegedly cited Trump’s rhetoric, claiming “Donald Trump’s tired of it,” prompting accusations of racial targeting under the guise of law enforcement.
Supporters Cite Safety, Critics See Overreach
Supporters of Trump’s move argue it enhances safety and shows leadership in tackling urban crime. However, detractors argue it’s an unnecessary show of force meant to intimidate rather than protect. As weekend protests loom, many fear increased tension and a deeper divide between law enforcement and local communities.
